BAR CODE TRACKING

Simple Bar Code Tracking as a Basic Solution

Almost every DC has some type of bar code track process in today’s age of supply chain logistics. Even companies slow to catch the RFID band wagon utilize standard bar code product ID. The simple single phase bar code (coupled with a cordless scanner) is ideal for carousel location verification on carousel putaway and for product accuracy on picking. ATI’s and EDGE’s carousel software eVolution utilizes both for ease of use and accuracy.

Limitations of Tracking with the Simple Bar Code

  • In order to keep up with inventories, companies must scan each bar code on every box of a particular product.
  • The process of shipping product is like going through a retail checkout line, which involves  scanning each bar code on each item.
  •  Bar code is a passive read-only technology, meaning that it cannot initiate and transmission.
  • One of the key differences between RFID and Bar Code technology is RFID eliminates the need for line-of-sight reading that bar coding depends on. Also, RFID scanning can be done at greater distances than bar code. High frequency RFID systems (850 MHz to 950 MHz and 2.4 GHz to 2.5 GHz) offer transmission ranges of more than 90 feet, although wavelengths in the 2.4 GHz range are absorbed by water (the human body) and therefore have limitations.

Bar codes like this one are found on almost every product we purchase
